“Until the aisle, the cake and the dancing that the uncles have been rehearsing.”

Page Two · The Long Read

Two people, one very stubborn kind of joy

They met the way the best stories start — without any warning and slightly late. Gregory arrived with a plan; Esther arrived with a better one. Somewhere between the introductions and the last cup of tea, the evening quietly decided something on their behalf.

What followed was years of the ordinary things that turn out to be everything: long drives with the radio arguing with itself, food shared straight from the pan, a friendship that kept insisting on being something larger.

Esther will tell you Gregory is the calmest man in any room, right up until the moment the football is on. Gregory will tell you Esther can fix anything with a look, a list and twenty minutes.

There was a proposal. There were witnesses, a shaky phone camera, and a yes that arrived before the question had properly finished. There is also a small boy who has been practising walking down aisles for months and intends to steal the entire day.

So: a church, a garden, three hundred plates of food, and a promise made out loud. You are invited to hear it.

Gregory, Esther and their son

The third member of the committee

He has approved the venue, the cake and the guest list, and has notes on the seating. His only condition is that he walks in first.

How we got here

01
The first meeting

Nobody planned it, nobody prepared for it, and both of them told a friend about it that same night.

02
The friendship

Months of long calls, borrowed umbrellas and food eaten standing up in the kitchen.

03
The proposal

A shaky phone camera, two witnesses and a yes that arrived early.

04
The wedding

Saturday, 19 December 2026. Bunga Executive Gardens, Kampala. You are in this part.

Placeholder milestones — real dates and details welcome.

Page Eleven · Questions

Things guests keep asking

Can I bring my children?

Yes. There is space for them to run and adults assigned to notice when they disappear.

Can I bring a plus one?

Your invitation says how many seats are yours. If it says two, bring two.

What time should I actually arrive?

9:30 am for the ceremony. This is one of the few Ugandan weddings that will start on time.

Is the reception at the same place?

No — church first, then Bunga Executive Gardens from 1:00 pm.

Can I take photographs?

Please do, except during the vows — that minute belongs to the photographer and to them.

Is there a dietary option?

Vegetarian plates are available. Tell us when you confirm your seat.

What about gifts?

There will be a gift table at the reception. Your presence is genuinely the point.

Who do I call on the day?

The committee line: +256 770 000 000. Save it now, thank us later.

Page Twelve · Your Seat

Every chair, plate and slice of cake is counted in advance. Telling us early is the single kindest thing you can do for the committee.
